Numerical simulations have been performed for flow past two equal‐sized square cylinders in tandem arrangement subjected to incoming planar shear flow. Effect of L/d ratio and the shear parameter has been studied. The range of L/d ratio (ratio of center‐to‐center distance (L) to cylinder width (d)) is varied from 2 to 7 and the non‐dimensional shear parameter (K) is varied from 0.0 to 0.4 in steps of 0.1. For all the cases the Reynolds number (Re) based on centerline velocity and cylinder width is fixed at 100. The results are compared with that of isolated square cylinder with uniform flow. Strouhal number decreases with increasing shear parameter. There are more than one shedding frequency at high shear parameters and L/d ratios. The mean drag coefficient is decreased with shear parameter and lesser than that of the single cylinder. The root mean square (RMS) value of both lift and drag coefficients is higher for the downstream cylinder for all values of shear parameter. With increasing L/d ratio, for both lift and drag, the RMS value increases and then decreases for upstream cylinder, whereas it continuously increases for the downstream cylinder. The stagnation point is moved towards the top leading edge with increasing shear. The critical L/d ratio, which is defined as the distance between two cylinders, beyond which the vortex shedding from the upstream cylinder occurs, decreases with increasing shear parameter. Free surface flows are pervasive in engineering and biomedical applications. In many interesting cases—particularly when small length scales are involved—surface forces (capillarity) dominate the flow dynamics. In these cases, computing the flow together with the shape of the surfaces, requires specialized solution techniques. This article investigates the capabilities of an operator splitting/finite elements method at handling accurately incompressible viscous flow with free surfaces at low capillary numbers. The test case of flow in the downstream section of a slot coater is used for three reasons: (1) it is an established benchmark; (2) it represents an idealized, yet industrially relevant flow; (3) high-fidelity results obtained with monolithic algorithms are available in literature. The flow and free surface shape attained with the new operator splitting scheme agree very satisfactorily with the results obtained with monolithic solvers. Because of its inherent computational simplicity, the new operator splitting scheme is attractive for large-scale simulations, three-dimensional flows, and flows of complex fluids.  相似文献

Bioactive paper includes a range of potential paper-based materials that can perform analytical functions normally reserved for multi-well plates in the laboratory or for portable electronic devices. Pathogen detection is the most compelling application. Simple paper-based detection, not requiring hardware, has the potential to have impacts in society, ranging from the kitchen to disasters in the developing world. Bioactive-paper research is an emerging field with significant efforts in Canada, USA (Harvard), Finland and Australia.Following a brief introduction to the material and surface properties of paper, I review the literature. Some of the early work exploits the porosity of paper to generate paper-based microfluidics (“paperfluidics”) devices. I exclude from this review printed electronic devices and plastics-supported devices.  相似文献

This work is concerned with the two-dimensional boundary layer flow of an upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid in a channel with chemical reaction. The walls of the channel are porous. Employing similarity transformations the governing non-linear partial differential equations are reduced into non-linear ordinary differential equations. The resulting ordinary differential equations are solved analytically using homotopy analysis method (HAM). Expressions for series solutions are derived. The convergence of the obtained series solutions are shown explicitly. The effects of Reynold’s number Re, Deborah number De, Schmidt number Sc and chemical reaction parameter γ on the velocity and the concentration fields are shown through graphs and discussed.  相似文献

The classical Three Gap Theorem asserts that for a natural number n and a real number p, there are at most three distinct distances between consecutive elements in the subset of [0,1) consisting of the reductions modulo 1 of the first n multiples of p. The model of an open queueing network in heavy traffic has been developed. These models are mathematical models of computer networks in heavy traffic. A limit theorem has been presented for the virtual waiting time of a customer in heavy traffic in open queueing networks. In this paper, we introduce a mixed integer stochastic programming approach to mean–variance post-tax portfolio management. This approach takes into account of risk in a multistage setting and allows general withdrawals from original capital. The uncertainty on asset returns is specified as a scenario tree. The risk across scenarios is addressed using the probabilistic approach of classical stochastic programming. The tax rules are used with stochastic linear and mixed integer quadratic programming models to compute an overall tax and return-risk efficient multistage portfolio. The incorporation of the risk term in the model provides robustness and leads to diversification over wrappers and assets within each wrapper. General withdrawals and risk aversion have an impact on the distribution of assets among wrappers. Computational results are presented using a study with different scenario trees in order to show the performance of these models.  相似文献

Microfluidic systems promise solutions for high throughput and highly specific analysis for biology, medicine and chemistry while consuming only tiny amounts of reactants and space. On these lab‐on‐a‐chip platforms often multiple physical effects such as electrokinetic, acoustic or capillary phenomena from various disciplines are exploited to gain the optimal functionality. The fluidics on these small length scales differ significantly from our experience of the macroscopic world. In this Review we survey some of the approaches and techniques to handle minute amounts of fluid volumes in microfluidic systems with special focus on surface acoustic wave driven fluidics, a technique developed in our laboratory. Here, we outline the basics of this technique and demonstrate, for example, how acoustic mixing and fluid actuation is realized. Furthermore we discuss the interplay of different physical effects in microfluidic systems and illustrate their usefulness for several applications.  相似文献

Tutte’s 3-Flow Conjecture suggests that every bridgeless graph with no 3-edge-cut can have its edges directed and labelled by the numbers 1 or 2 in such a way that at each vertex the sum of incoming values equals the sum of outgoing values. In this paper we show that Tutte’s 3-Flow Conjecture is true for Cayley graphs of groups whose Sylow 2-subgroup is a direct factor of the group; in particular, it is true for Cayley graphs of nilpotent groups. This improves a recent result of Potočnik et al. (Discrete Math. 297:119–127, 2005) concerning nowhere-zero 3-flows in abelian Cayley graphs.  相似文献
